Atopolis @ Mons Belgium

If you are in Belgium this summer you should take the time to visit Mons. Mons is the European capital of culture 2015 and, amongst other events, it hosts an important contemporary art exhibition, ATOPOLIS.

Nowadays when the debate about migrants is one of the most important topics in Europe, ATOPOLIS, with its political content, is a potential cure for the current Zeitgeist dominated by egoism and closed-mindedness. For this event, more than twenty-three artists will temporarily install their proposal for "Atopolis", an ideal mixed-race city connected to everyplace or anyplace.

This exhibition, organized by WIELS, the contemporary art center in Brussels, will show you a great group of artists interested in phenomena of circulation, dispersion and cultural dislocation. In fact, the title ATOPOLIS comes from Edward Glissant's works and his ideas in favor of fluid identities, unhindered exchanges and an ideal cosmopolitan openness, which he calls the ‘Relation’, interconnected and radically egalitarian. Also the city is emblematic for this subject. Mons was the historic heart of the first industrialization in the continent, was the meeting point of migrants and cultures and the symbol on an important cultural cross pollination.

You will find, among others, artworks by Saadane Afif, Nevin Alada, Francis Alÿs, Danai Anesiadou, El Anatsui, Yto Barrada, Huma Bhabha, Vincen Beeckman, Vlassis Caniaris, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Meschac Gaba , Jef Geys, Thomas Hirschhorn, David Medalla,Adrian Melis, Benoit Platéus, Diego Tonus, Jack Whitten.
