Karen Swami is a renowned French ceramicartist celebrated for her minimalist sculptural vessels and the refinedsensitivity of her surfaces. Her work creates a subtle dialogue betweencontemporary ceramic art and ancient pottery traditions, resulting in piecesthat feel both timeless and distinctly modern.

The name Swami — phonetically derived from her maiden name, Souhami — alsoreferences the Sanskrit word for spiritual teacher, reflecting the meditativeand intuitive dimension of her practice. Living and working between Paris andBrittany, Karen Swami develops a body of work shaped by a deep respect fornatural materials and the transformative processes of earth and fire.

Her inspirations range from ancient Egyptian Nagada pottery to Japaneseceramics, Hellenistic forms, and the work of influential artists such as AlevEbüzziya Siesbye and Magdalene Odundo. Her vessels extend the elegance oftraditional forms while exploring contemporary interpretations of texture, imperfection, and material depth.

Although fascinated by clay since childhood, Karen Swami fully committed toceramics in 2009 and earned her professional pottery certification in 2010.Since then, she has developed a distinctive artistic language that combinestraditional craftsmanship with experimental surface techniques.

Her works are characterized by organic forms, natural textures, and earthypalettes ranging from cobalt blues to celadon greens. Her creative processincludes hand-burnishing with agate stones, bisque and smoke firing, waxingtechniques, and the incorporation of Japanese Kintsugi using Urushi lacquer andpure gold.

These processes generate richly layered tactile surfaces that celebratewabi-sabi aesthetics — the beauty of imperfection, time, and impermanence.

Through the fusion of Asian aesthetics, Mediterranean heritage, andcontemporary European sensibilities, Karen Swami creates works that are quiet, soulful, and deeply rooted in a universal memory of material. Her creations arenow included in numerous international art collections.
