Fatiha Zemmouri – Biography

Fatiha Zemmouri (born 1966, Casablanca, Morocco) is a Moroccan visual artist whose work explores memory, transformation, and the materiality of surfaces. Recognized as a leading figure in African contemporary art, she develops a practice that bridges painting, sculpture, and installation.

After studying architecture in Casablanca, Zemmouri shifted towards fine art, where she developed a language rooted in experimentation with organic and raw materials. Wood, charcoal, ash, and textiles are recurring elements in her practice, chosen for their symbolic charge and their capacity for metamorphosis. Her pieces often reveal processes of combustion, erosion, and layering, reflecting cycles of destruction and regeneration, presence and absence.

Her work has been exhibited internationally, contributing to the growing visibility of North African contemporary art on the global stage. Zemmouri’s installations and wall-based works are represented in both institutional and private collections. She has participated in exhibitions across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, underscoring the cross-cultural resonance of her artistic vision.

At Alexia Werrie Gallery in Brussels, her practice connects with the gallery’s mission to highlight diverse perspectives in African contemporary art while fostering dialogue with the Belgian and European art scenes. Her work combines formal precision with poetic depth, offering powerful reflections on materiality, memory, and identity.
