Maud Ruby is a French artist and featherwork specialist based in Paris, whose practice explores the poetic and sculptural possibilities of feathers. Working at the intersection of contemporary art, fine craftsmanship and collectible design, she transforms delicate natural materials into expressive three-dimensional compositions.
Originally trained in fashion design and patternmaking at LISAA in Paris, she developed an early fascination with textiles, volume and material experimentation. Her subsequent training in millinery led her to discover the traditional art of featherwork, which became central to her creative practice.
After refining her expertise at Maison Legeron, one of Paris's renowned featherwork ateliers, Maud Ruby established her own creative studio in 2016. Her experience includes collaborations with prestigious fashion houses such as Givenchy, Dries Van Noten and The Row, alongside projects in design and interior architecture.
Today, her artistic research extends beyond fashion, exploring the transformation of feathers into contemporary sculptural forms. Combining traditional featherwork, millinery techniques and unconventional materials, she develops a distinctive visual language in which craftsmanship becomes a vehicle for artistic experimentation.
Inspired by nature, organic structures and the movement of living forms, Maud Ruby investigates the relationship between fragility, transformation and suspended motion.
Her creations invite viewers to reconsider the feather not simply as an ornamental material, but as a medium capable of expressing volume, rhythm and emotion.
At the heart of Maud Ruby's artistic practice lies a fascination with the movement and transformation of feathers.
Drawing on the exceptional craftsmanship of traditional French plumasserie, she experiments with material combinations, structural techniques and sculptural construction. Feathers are associated with wood, natural fibres and other organic elements, creating unexpected relationships between softness and rigidity, delicacy and structure.
Her artistic process incorporates techniques borrowed from millinery, including sisal-based structures and traditional methods of shaping and assembling materials. Rather than reproducing established decorative forms, Ruby adapts these skills to construct her own contemporary sculptural vocabulary.
Movement occupies a central place in her work. Inspired by the natural behaviour of feathers, the rhythms of the living world and the idea of suspended motion, she creates compositions that seem to capture a fleeting gesture.
Through repetition, layering and the interplay of contrasting textures, her sculptures evoke the delicate balance between stillness and movement.
The result is a body of work that bridges contemporary sculpture, decorative arts and fine craftsmanship, inviting a renewed appreciation of traditional techniques through a contemporary artistic perspective.
Presented at the international fine craft biennial Révélations in 2023, Envol represents an important expression of Maud Ruby's sculptural research.
Combining goose feathers, bronze rooster feathers and plane-tree wood petals, the sculpture explores the relationship between organic materials, movement and structural balance.
Constructed on a sisal base using techniques derived from traditional millinery, Envol transforms delicate natural elements into a three-dimensional composition that appears suspended in motion.
The interaction between feathers and wooden petals creates a poetic tension between lightness and solidity, evoking the sensation of movement captured in a single moment.
Through this work, Maud Ruby demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship can become a powerful means of contemporary sculptural expression.
