Jean Boghossian is a Belgian artist of Armenian and Lebanese origin, internationally recognized for his singular use of fire within contemporary art. Through powerfully expressive abstract works, he explores themes of movement, transformation, and regeneration, creating compositions in which destruction and creation coexist in fragile balance.

Born in Aleppo in 1949 into a renowned family of jewelers, Jean Boghossian grewup surrounded by artisanal traditions and cultural openness. After studyingEconomics and Sociology at Saint Joseph University in Beirut, he worked withinthe family business before the Lebanese Civil War led him to settle in Belgiumin 1975. Driven by a profound passion for art, he later joined the Academy ofFine Arts in Boitsfort, Brussels, while continuing his activities in jewelry.

In 1992, together with his father and brother, Jean Boghossian founded theBoghossian Foundation at Villa Empain in Brussels, an institution dedicated tointercultural dialogue between East and West. This cosmopolitan vision alsopermeates his artistic practice, nourished by experiences of exile, memory, andcultural encounters.

For more than thirty years, Jean Boghossian has developed a visual languagecentered on the use of fire as a creative tool. Flames, smoke, burns, andtraces become compositional elements in their own right. The artist folds,staples, covers, burns, and reworks the canvas through a process in whichmastery and unpredictability constantly interact. Fire acts simultaneously as adestructive and generative force, revealing organic textures, surfaceaccidents, and abstract landscapes of striking intensity.

While artists such as Yves Klein and Claudio Parmiggiani have also explored theuse of fire, Jean Boghossian’s approach is distinguished by its deeply physicaland intuitive relationship to material. Each composition results from a tensionbetween control and surrender, giving rise to vibrant works in which the energyof gesture remains visible.

His work draws equally from historical upheavals and from a profoundlyhumanistic vision of art. Through burned and transformed surfaces, JeanBoghossian reflects on resilience, memory, and the possibility of rebirth. Hiswork affirms art as a universal language capable of transforming chaos intobeauty and emotion.

His unique approach has gained international recognition, leading to significant exhibitions, including representing the Pavilion of the Republic of Armenia at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 with Fiamma Inestinguibile. In 2019, his work was featured at the Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art in Gyeongju, Korea, in an exhibition titled Flamme Intérieure. He continued to engage viewers in 2022 with Melencolia Contemporanea in Venice and Dialogue at the Matenadaran in Yerevan, Armenia, followed by The Sea is Green at SBM and Opera Gallery in Monaco. In 2023, his The Language of Fire – Flaming Imaginary was presented at Villa Zito’s Pinacoteca, curated by Bruno Corà, and various locations in Palermo.

In 2024, Boghossian held solo exhibitions with N Gallery, Nosbaum Reding Gallery, and Anima Gallery, while also presenting large-scale in situ exhibitions at the Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo, UBP Union Bancaire Privée in Monaco, and a permanent exhibition at the Steigenberger Icon Wiltcher’s in Brussels. Additionally, his works were featured at the Brafa Art Fair, TEFAF Maastricht, Art Busan, Luxembourg Art Week, and KIAF Seoul in the same year. The Artist also participated in Art D’Égypte’s Forever is Now exhibition, exhibiting alongside leading contemporary artists at the Great Pyramids of Giza. Most recently, in 2025, Boghossian was exhibiting in Gem Geneve, Switzerland.
